New Delhi : Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Tuesday met Bakhtiyor Saidov, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan, at Parliament House, where the two leaders held wide-ranging discussions on further strengthening the longstanding friendship and strategic partnership between India and Uzbekistan.
During the meeting, both sides discussed ways to enhance cooperation in parliamentary exchanges, trade, investment, connectivity, education, culture, and people-to-people ties, reaffirming their shared commitment to expanding bilateral engagement.
Om Birla Recalls Uzbekistan Visit
Speaker Om Birla recalled his visit to Tashkent for the 150th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in April 2025, during which he met President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, Senate Chairperson Tanzila Narbayeva, and Legislative Chamber Speaker Nuriddin Ismoilov.
He said those interactions further strengthened the mutual commitment of both countries to deepen bilateral relations and parliamentary cooperation.
India-Uzbekistan Parliamentary Friendship Group Highlighted
Om Birla also highlighted the formation of the India-Uzbekistan Parliamentary Friendship Group by the Parliament of India in March 2026. The group comprises members from both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha and is aimed at promoting closer cooperation in the fields of economic development, education, culture, and humanitarian initiatives.
He said the Friendship Group would serve as an important institutional platform for expanding collaboration between the legislatures of the two countries.
Commitment to Strategic Partnership
Expressing confidence in the future of bilateral relations, Om Birla said the discussions would further strengthen the India-Uzbekistan Strategic Partnership, deepen parliamentary engagement, and create new opportunities for cooperation for the mutual benefit of both friendly nations.
The meeting reaffirmed the growing momentum in India-Uzbekistan relations and the shared commitment of both sides to strengthening cooperation across multiple sectors.
