New Delhi : Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri on Tuesday said India successfully strengthened its energy security and shielded its citizens from the impact of the global energy crisis through a series of strategic measures implemented under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Addressing members of the Consultative Committee of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Puri briefed them on the government’s initiatives to enhance energy security and move towards greater self-sufficiency despite global supply disruptions and geopolitical uncertainties.
The minister said that while many countries experienced fuel shortages, rationing, and emergency measures, India witnessed no energy crisis, ensuring uninterrupted fuel supplies across the country.
Diversified Energy Imports
Hardeep Singh Puri said the government responded to rising global energy prices and geopolitical tensions with a comprehensive strategy that included diversifying India’s crude oil import sources from 27 to 41 countries.
He added that the government prioritised the availability of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) for households and critical sectors while increasing domestic LPG production to meet growing demand.
Measures to Protect Consumers
According to the minister, the government’s response also included reductions in excise duty, coordinated support from Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs), and continuous monitoring through dedicated “war rooms” to ensure smooth fuel distribution and protect consumers from global price volatility.
These measures, he said, helped maintain stable fuel supplies despite disruptions in international energy markets.
No Fuel Shortages Across India
Puri stated that India maintained adequate fuel stocks, ensured 100 per cent availability of household LPG and Piped Natural Gas (PNG), and avoided any fuel dry-outs or supply disruptions anywhere in the country.
He said that while several nations struggled with energy shortages and soaring prices, India’s coordinated policy measures enabled it to safeguard energy security and minimise the impact of the global energy crisis on its citizens.
The minister reiterated that strengthening energy security remains a key priority of the government as India continues its journey towards a resilient and self-reliant energy sector.
