New Delhi/Dhaka : Bangladesh has formally raised concerns with India over reports circulating on social media that former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina may deliver a public address on August 5, urging New Delhi to prevent its territory from being used for political activities that could destabilise Bangladesh.
The issue was discussed during a courtesy meeting between India’s newly appointed High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Dinesh Trivedi, and Bangladesh Prime Minister’s Advisor on Foreign Affairs, Humayun Kabir, held at the Prime Minister’s Office in Tejgaon on Monday.
According to an official statement issued by Bangladesh, the two sides reviewed various aspects of the existing bilateral relationship and discussed matters of mutual interest. Both expressed optimism about further strengthening India-Bangladesh ties based on mutual respect, trust, and shared interests.
During the meeting, Foreign Affairs Advisor Humayun Kabir referred to social media reports suggesting that Sheikh Hasina, whom the Bangladesh government described as a fugitive, could address the public on August 5.
Kabir conveyed Bangladesh’s expectation that India would ensure that no individual associated with organisations banned in Bangladesh, including Sheikh Hasina, is allowed to use Indian territory to deliver political speeches or undertake activities that could create instability within Bangladesh. He cautioned that such developments could adversely affect the positive trajectory of bilateral relations.
Responding to the concerns, Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi said he would take note of the matter, make the necessary inquiries, and remain vigilant on the issue.
Both sides reiterated the importance of maintaining regular dialogue and constructive engagement, expressing confidence that long-term and sustainable solutions to bilateral issues can be achieved through mutual trust and continued discussions.
