New Delhi: The National Cadet Corps (NCC) organised Cyclothon 2026 in New Delhi on August 2 to commemorate the 79th anniversary of India’s Independence, promoting fitness, environmental sustainability and patriotism among the youth.
The event was flagged off by Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Mansukh Mandaviya in the presence of Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth, Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, Olympic medallist and boxing legend M.C. Mary Kom, tennis icon Leander Paes, and Director General, NCC, Lieutenant General Virendra Vats.
As part of the commemorative initiative, 79 NCC cadets, led by Lieutenant General Virendra Vats, undertook a symbolic 79-kilometre cycling expedition to mark the country’s 79 years of Independence. The rally began from the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium, travelled through key landmarks across the national capital and concluded at the same venue.
Organised under the theme “Clean India, Green India, Fit India,” the Cyclothon highlighted the NCC’s commitment to several national campaigns, including TB Mukt Bharat, Swachh Bharat, Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam, and Har Ghar Tiranga.
The event encouraged young people and the public to adopt cycling as an environmentally friendly and sustainable mode of transport, while promoting cleaner air, reduced carbon emissions and healthier lifestyles.
More than a sporting event, NCC Cyclothon 2026 served as a platform to spread awareness about physical fitness, environmental conservation, road safety and responsible citizenship. Through the initiative, the NCC sought to inspire young people to embrace the values of discipline, teamwork, resilience and community service, encouraging them to become active contributors towards building a stronger, healthier and greener India.
