New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, along with Delhi BJP President and Union Minister of State Harsh Malhotra, distributed bicycles to more than 3,000 Class IX girl students from Delhi Government schools under the Vidya Vahini Yojana, aimed at promoting girls’ education and improving access to schools.
The initiative seeks to make commuting safer and more convenient for girl students while encouraging them to continue their education without transportation-related challenges.
Addressing the event, the Chief Minister said the scheme is designed to empower young girls by providing them with greater mobility and independence. She emphasized that the bicycles represent more than just a mode of transport, serving as a symbol of opportunity, confidence, and educational empowerment.
Under the next phases of the Vidya Vahini Yojana, the Delhi Government plans to distribute more than 1.40 lakh free bicycles to eligible girl students studying in government schools across the national capital.
According to the government, the initiative aims to reduce barriers to education, ensure safer travel for school-going girls, and improve school attendance, particularly among students who travel long distances to attend classes.
Highlighting the broader vision of the programme, the government said that each bicycle carries not only a student’s aspirations but also provides parents with greater peace of mind by ensuring a safer and more reliable means of commuting to school.
The Vidya Vahini Yojana is part of the Delhi Government’s efforts to strengthen girls’ education and create an environment where every girl has the opportunity to pursue her studies with confidence, dignity, and equal access to educational opportunities.
