New Delhi/ Kyiv: Ukraine and nine European countries have announced the formation of a new coalition aimed at strengthening Europe’s ability to defend against the growing threat of ballistic missiles, according to media reports.

The initiative was announced by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy along with leaders of Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom.

The countries said they recognise the increasing challenge posed by ballistic missile systems, which are considered more difficult to intercept compared with cruise missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles (drones).

Focus on Strengthening Europe’s Missile Defence

The newly formed coalition is expected to focus on improving coordination among participating nations, enhancing missile defence capabilities and developing stronger mechanisms to protect European territories from potential missile threats.

The leaders highlighted that evolving missile technologies have created new security challenges, requiring greater cooperation, advanced defence systems and improved preparedness.

Growing Security Concerns in Europe

The announcement comes amid heightened security concerns across Europe following continued developments in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

European nations have increasingly focused on strengthening air and missile defence networks, as ballistic missile capabilities have become a major factor in modern warfare.

Joint Commitment to Regional Security

The participating countries reaffirmed their commitment to protecting European security through closer cooperation, technological advancement and coordinated defence planning.

The coalition reflects a broader effort by European nations to address emerging military threats and build a more resilient defence framework against advanced missile systems.
