New Delhi : Indian Ambassador V Doraiswami, currently serving in China, addressed a high-level discussion at the 14th edition of the World Peace Forum, participating in the panel on “Protectionism and Global Economic Governance.”
In his remarks, he offered a broad interpretation of modern protectionism, noting that it extends well beyond traditional tariffs and trade barriers. He highlighted that contemporary protectionist practices increasingly include regulatory mechanisms such as evolving standards, complex certification procedures, export control regimes, and the strategic use of financial, technological, and digital infrastructure as instruments of economic influence.
He further observed a global shift in economic policymaking, where many countries are moving away from efficiency-driven models toward approaches prioritizing national security and resilience in production systems. According to him, this transition is reshaping the architecture of global trade and investment flows.
Calling for constructive engagement, the Ambassador emphasized the need for deeper international dialogue to address these emerging challenges. He advocated for a more balanced and equitable framework of globalization and stronger cooperation in shaping global economic governance in a way that accommodates both development priorities and security concerns.
