New Delhi : India is reportedly planning to revive and fast-track efforts on the strategically important 700-kilometre Chabahar–Zahedan railway corridor in Iran, aimed at strengthening regional connectivity and expanding access to key markets across Central Asia and Eurasia.

The proposed rail link will connect Chabahar Port with Iran’s national railway network and integrate with the International North–South Transport Corridor (INSTC), creating a shorter and more efficient trade route for India to reach Afghanistan, Central Asia, and beyond.

The project is considered strategically significant as it will provide India with an alternative connectivity pathway, reducing dependence on traditional maritime routes and bypassing Pakistan-based transit routes, including the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

Key advantages of the rail corridor include improved access to Central Asian and Eurasian markets, enhanced regional trade connectivity, greater opportunities in energy cooperation with Iran, and diversification of India’s supply and logistics networks.

The estimated cost of the project is around $1.5 billion. Iran is expected to finance a major portion of the investment, while India may contribute approximately $400–500 million along with providing engineering and technical expertise.

The revival of the Chabahar–Zahedan railway project is being viewed as a major strategic infrastructure initiative that could strengthen India’s westward trade connectivity and expand its role in regional economic integration.
