New Delhi : Russia has reportedly proposed the supply of approximately two squadrons of Su-57 fifth-generation fighter aircraft to India, with potential deliveries beginning around 2027–28 and the full induction timeline extending to 2030–31.

According to reports, India is currently evaluating the offer, which could involve around 36–40 aircraft as part of a possible interim capability enhancement ahead of its indigenous Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme.

The proposal is said to include a phased production ramp-up by Russia, with the aim of increasing output in the coming years. The aircraft are currently powered by AL-41F1 engines, while future upgrades involving next-generation powerplants have also been indicated.

The offer reportedly leaves scope for domestic participation, with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) potentially supporting up to 50% of production infrastructure if a local manufacturing arrangement is approved. However, key considerations for India are expected to include cost, technology transfer, and long-term strategic autonomy.

The discussions remain at an early stage, with no final decision announced.
