New Delhi : At a joint press conference in New Delhi with External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio highlighted the shared democratic values between India and the United States, stressing that leaders in both nations are accountable to their citizens for every major policy decision.

Speaking about the functioning of democracies, Rubio said governments must constantly justify their decisions to the people who elected them. He noted that democratic systems come with strong public scrutiny through opposition parties, free media, and active public discourse.

Referring to India’s vibrant media landscape, Rubio remarked that the intense level of public attention and scrutiny in democracies naturally aligns the interests of countries like India and the United States. He said both governments understand that every agreement, announcement, and collaborative initiative must ultimately stand the test of public accountability.

The US Secretary of State underlined that this mutual understanding strengthens cooperation between the two democracies, as leaders in both countries remain answerable to their voters and citizens.
