Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar Visits Key Hydropower Projects in Bhutan, Boosts Energy Cooperation

New Delhi : Union Minister for Power and Housing & Urban Affairs Manohar Lal Khattar, on the second day of his visit to Bhutan, inspected key hydropower infrastructure projects, including the Punatsangchhu-I Hydropower Project and Punatsangchhu-II Hydropower Project.

At the Punatsangchhu-I project site, the Minister attended the concrete pouring ceremony for the dam, marking a major milestone in the progress of what is the largest joint hydropower venture between India and Bhutan. The project is expected to significantly boost Bhutan’s hydropower generation capacity upon completion.

During his visit, the Minister highlighted the strong and enduring partnership between the two countries in the energy sector. He reaffirmed India’s continued support through financial assistance and technical collaboration, and commended the joint efforts of engineers and experts from both nations in ensuring the project’s steady and safe advancement. He also inspected the powerhouse and reviewed the implementation status and key milestones achieved so far.

Subsequently, Manohar Lal Khattar visited the Punatsangchhu-II Hydropower Project, which was jointly inaugurated on November 11, 2025, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and His Majesty Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck. The project has since become a major contributor to Bhutan’s energy sector.

The Minister reviewed the project’s operational performance, noting that it has already generated substantial electricity and revenue while facilitating the export of clean power to India. He appreciated the efficiency and successful execution of the project, acknowledging its role in supporting Bhutan’s economic growth. He reiterated India’s commitment to further strengthening cooperation in sustainable energy development.

As part of his visit, the Minister also toured the historic Wangdue Phodrang Dzong, highlighting Bhutan’s rich cultural and architectural heritage.
