New Delhi : The keel laying ceremony for Fast Patrol Vessel-4 (FPV-4) and the plate cutting ceremony for FPV-7, part of a 14-vessel Fast Patrol Vessel project for the Indian Coast Guard, were held at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited on April 6.
The vessels are being built under an ongoing indigenous shipbuilding programme and are expected to significantly enhance coastal security and maritime law enforcement capabilities.
Advanced Technology and Indigenous Components
These Fast Patrol Vessels are being equipped with state-of-the-art systems, including AI-based predictive maintenance technology and multipurpose drones to improve operational efficiency and surveillance capabilities.
The project also reflects a strong push towards indigenisation, with key components sourced domestically. These include gearboxes supplied by M/s Triveni, Mysore, and water jet propulsion systems from M/s MJP India.
Designed for Coastal Security
The FPVs, with an approximate displacement of 340 tonnes and water-jet propulsion, are specifically designed for high-speed coastal operations. They will be deployed for maritime surveillance, interdiction, and law enforcement duties.
Boost to ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ Vision
The construction of FPV-4 and FPV-7 aligns with the Government of India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision, promoting indigenous defence manufacturing.
Once commissioned, these vessels will strengthen the operational presence of the Indian Coast Guard in the Indian Ocean Region and enhance maritime security across India’s coastline.
