New Delhi : Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science & Technology and other key departments, Jitendra Singh, on Wednesday underlined the government’s continued efforts to foster scientific temper among youth, stating that the Yuva Vigyani Karyakram (YUVIKA) is playing a crucial role in inspiring school students to pursue careers in space science.

Replying to an Unstarred Question in the Lok Sabha during the Budget Session, raised by Anita Nagarsingh Chouhan, the Minister said that YUVIKA has been specifically designed to generate early interest in space science among students.

He explained that the programme targets Class 9 students across the country, aiming to provide them with a foundational understanding of space science, technology, and applications, while encouraging them to explore it as a future career path.

Elaborating on the selection process, Dr. Singh said students are shortlisted through online screening based on academic performance, followed by an online quiz. Final selection is made after verification of credentials, ensuring transparency and merit-based selection.

Highlighting the programme’s reach, he informed that a total of 1,320 students have benefitted from YUVIKA so far, indicating growing interest among young learners in space-related fields.

The Minister also emphasised the government’s focus on inclusivity, noting that 15 per cent reservation has been provided for students from rural and remote areas to ensure equitable access and wider participation.

Reiterating the broader vision, Dr. Singh said initiatives like YUVIKA are vital for building a scientifically empowered nation and strengthening India’s space sector through early identification and nurturing of talent.
