New Delhi : The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report revealing that 285 inmates have died in various prisons of Chhattisgarh over the past four years, raising serious concerns over prison conditions and inmate welfare.
According to the report, the highest number of deaths—90—was recorded in 2022, while 66 deaths occurred between January 2025 and January 31, 2026. The state government, in its Assembly response, attributed these deaths to causes such as suicides and chronic illnesses.
Overcrowding and Poor Healthcare Under Scrutiny
As per media reports published on March 23, 2026, most prisons in the state are severely overcrowded, contributing to the rapid spread of infections and increasing mental stress among inmates.
Additionally, there is a significant shortage of medical professionals, including doctors and psychiatrists, further aggravating the situation and limiting access to timely healthcare for prisoners.
NHRC Flags Possible Human Rights Violations
Taking serious note of the issue, the Commission observed that if the reported facts are accurate, they point towards grave violations of human rights.
The NHRC has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Prisons, Chhattisgarh, directing them to submit a detailed report within two weeks.
Report to Address Key Concerns
The Commission has sought comprehensive information on:
- The extent of overcrowding in prisons
- Vacant positions of doctors and healthcare staff
- Measures being undertaken by the state government to improve prison conditions
Rising Concern Over Prison Reforms in India
The incident has once again highlighted the urgent need for prison reforms in India, including better infrastructure, improved healthcare facilities, and mental health support systems to safeguard inmates’ rights and well-being.
