New Delhi : Leaders of the opposition INDIA bloc on Friday held a meeting at the residence of Congress President and Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Shri Mallikarjun Kharge, to review preparations and discuss the political agenda for their proposed mega rally scheduled for November 1 at Ramlila Maidan in New Delhi.

The meeting focused on coordinating the participation of alliance partners, mobilising party workers and supporters from different states, and finalising the key issues to be raised during the rally. Senior leaders from several opposition parties participated in the deliberations.

SIR and Electoral Reforms at the Centre of Opposition Campaign

A major focus of the proposed rally will be the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls being undertaken by the Election Commission of India. The INDIA bloc has raised concerns over the process, alleging that it could lead to the exclusion of eligible voters and demanding greater transparency and accountability in the revision of electoral rolls.

The opposition alliance is seeking:

– Cancellation of the ongoing SIR exercise and restoration of the pre-SIR electoral rolls for future elections.
– Complete transparency in the addition, deletion and correction of voters’ names.
– Adequate notice, valid reasons and an effective appeal mechanism before removing any legitimate voter.
– Protection of eligible voters from exclusion due to documentation-related difficulties or administrative shortcomings.
– Greater accountability and institutional independence of the Election Commission.
– A return to ballot paper-based voting instead of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs).

The opposition parties have also demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, alleging irregularities in the electoral roll revision process and questioning the functioning of the Election Commission. These allegations and demands form the central theme of their proposed November 1 mobilisation.

Broader Opposition Criticism of Modi Government

Beyond the SIR issue, the INDIA bloc intends to use the rally to raise broader concerns about the functioning of the Narendra Modi-led NDA government, particularly regarding democratic institutions, constitutional safeguards, parliamentary accountability and the independence of constitutional bodies.

Opposition leaders have accused the government of weakening democratic institutions and have called for stronger safeguards to protect the Constitution, electoral democracy and the fundamental principle of equal voting rights.

The alliance has projected the proposed gathering as part of a wider campaign under the message of ‘Save Democracy’, seeking to bring together opposition political parties, civil society organisations, students, youth, workers and other sections of society.

The November 1 rally at Ramlila Maidan is expected to provide a common platform for opposition leaders to articulate their concerns over electoral reforms, democratic accountability and the role of constitutional institutions.

For the INDIA bloc, the rally will also be an opportunity to demonstrate coordination among its constituent parties and present a united political position on issues they believe require national attention.
