New York: External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar joined European Council President António Costa in co-chairing the Partners for Multilateralism, International Law, Peace & Prosperity (P4M) Summit.

Addressing the summit, Jaishankar underlined the essential role of multilateralism in today’s global environment, particularly in protecting the spirit of international cooperation amid intensifying geopolitical competition, tensions and conflicts.

He highlighted the need to focus on specific dimensions of ongoing conflicts and develop appropriate frameworks and guardrails for emerging capabilities. He also stressed the importance of de-risking and diversification to address risks arising from dominance and disruptions, while reaffirming the significance of international law, rules and norms.

Jaishankar also made a strong case for Reformed Multilateralism, saying that strengthening multilateral institutions requires more participative deliberations and transparent decision-making.

He noted that such an approach could help restore hope and optimism in the UN system and strengthen the collective resolve of countries to work together on shared global challenges.

The P4M Summit brought renewed focus on strengthening international cooperation, upholding international law and making multilateral institutions more representative and effective.
