New Delhi : Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman met Nigel Clarke, Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), in New Delhi on Monday. Clarke is currently on a visit to India.
During the meeting, Sitharaman and Clarke reviewed India-IMF relations and discussed ways to deepen engagement on macroeconomic cooperation. The Finance Minister appreciated India’s role in supporting SARTTAC, the IMF’s South Asia Regional Training and Technical Assistance Center.
Both sides stressed the importance of sustained India-IMF cooperation to promote sound economic policies, strengthen macroeconomic stability and enhance regional and global economic resilience.
The discussions also covered the economic outlook for India and the global economy, including India’s evolving growth trajectory and the impact of ongoing changes in the international economic environment.
India’s trade agenda, developments in the global trading system and recently concluded bilateral trade agreements also featured prominently in the discussions.
Clarke acknowledged India’s strong economic performance, resilience and growth record amid the prevailing global uncertainties. He also appreciated the Government of India’s efforts towards fiscal consolidation and measures undertaken to provide support following the West Asian crisis.
