New Delhi : Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi met students who are demanding education, employment and accountability from the Modi government, according to a statement shared by his office. The statement said some of the students had suffered serious injuries during protests, with one student sustaining a leg injury from an AK-47 bullet. It said the injury shattered his dream of joining the Indian Army and serving the country. Two other students were also injured by bullets in their shoulders.
“These were not criminals,” the statement said, describing them as students from poor families who had stepped out to pursue their education while carrying the aspirations of their families. Some hoped to secure good jobs, while others wanted to improve their families’ circumstances.
Addressing Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Chief Minister, the statement said that the students’ physical injuries would eventually heal, but questioned whether their shattered dreams could also be restored.
