New Delhi: Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal addressed the 66th Annual Convention of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) on the theme “Building Resilience in Sustainable Mobility for Viksit Bharat”, highlighting the need to position India as a globally competitive hub for automotive manufacturing, technology and design.
The Minister discussed India’s transformation from a major automotive market into an increasingly important global destination for manufacturing, innovation and automotive design. The 66th SIAM Annual Convention was held in New Delhi on September 3, 2026.
Focus on Localisation and Supply-Chain Resilience
Goyal emphasised the importance of strengthening domestic localisation across the automotive value chain to reduce vulnerabilities arising from global supply-chain disruptions.
He called for greater efforts to secure access to critical minerals and reliable energy supplies, while encouraging the industry to step up investments in research and development, technology and product quality.
The Minister also highlighted the opportunities emerging from India’s expanding network of Free Trade Agreements (FTAs), which can provide Indian automotive manufacturers and component makers with wider access to international markets.
Building a Sustainable Mobility Ecosystem
Goyal stressed that close cooperation between the government and automotive industry would be crucial to developing a globally trusted and future-ready mobility ecosystem.
He underlined the need for Indian companies to combine manufacturing capabilities with innovation, quality and sustainability to strengthen their position in global markets and contribute to the broader vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.
The discussions at the convention come as India’s automobile industry seeks to strengthen its global competitiveness while navigating the transition towards electric and sustainable mobility, advanced technologies and resilient supply chains. Recent government and industry initiatives have also placed greater emphasis on localisation, green mobility and technological innovation.
Goyal’s message at the convention was clear: India’s next phase of automotive growth must be driven not only by expanding production, but also by deeper localisation, secure resources, innovation, quality and stronger integration with global markets.
