New Delhi/Buenos Aires : India’s Ambassador to Argentina, Ajaneesh Kumar, called on Martín Menem, President of Argentina’s Chamber of Deputies, to discuss issues of bilateral interest between the two countries. During the meeting, the two sides highlighted the importance of strengthening people-to-people ties through the promotion of tourism and the establishment of direct air connectivity between India and Argentina.
Improved air links could make travel more convenient and encourage greater exchanges among tourists, students, business communities, cultural groups and professionals. Direct connectivity could also support trade, investment and academic cooperation.
India–Argentina Diplomatic Relations
India and Argentina established diplomatic relations on February 3, 1949. The two countries marked 75 years of diplomatic ties in 2024, reflecting a long-standing relationship based on mutual respect and shared democratic values.
The relationship was elevated to a Strategic Partnership during Argentine President Mauricio Macri’s visit to India in February 2019. Since then, cooperation has expanded across several areas, including:
-Political and diplomatic engagement;
-Trade and investment;
-Agriculture and food security;
-Pharmaceuticals and healthcare;
-Information technology;
-Science and technology;
-Renewable energy;
-Mining and critical minerals;
-Defence and security;
-Education and culture.
India and Argentina have complementary economic strengths. Argentina is an important source of edible oils and agricultural commodities, while India has growing opportunities in pharmaceuticals, information technology, automobiles, engineering goods and renewable-energy cooperation. The two countries have also explored collaboration in lithium and other critical minerals, which are important for batteries, electric vehicles and clean-energy technologies.
High-level engagement has continued in recent years, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Argentina on July 4–5, 2025, during which he held discussions with Argentine President Javier Milei on strengthening bilateral cooperation.
The meeting between Ambassador Ajaneesh Kumar and Martín Menem underlined the shared interest in expanding India–Argentina relations beyond government-to-government engagement. Promoting tourism, improving air connectivity and encouraging wider contact between citizens could give further momentum to the strategic partnership and bring the two countries’ people closer together.
