New Delhi : BJP National Spokesperson and Member of Parliament Dr. Sambit Patra on Tuesday accused the Congress and several parties of the INDIA alliance of deliberately disrupting the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament, alleging that their actions have prevented meaningful discussions on key legislation and issues of public importance.
Addressing a press conference, Patra said crores of rupees are spent on conducting every Parliament session, but since the beginning of the Monsoon Session, Question Hour has not functioned properly, Zero Hour has repeatedly been disrupted, and several important Bills have not been discussed.
“The Congress Party and some of its allied parties are disrupting the Monsoon Session. Crores of rupees are spent on a single session. However, ever since the session began, Question Hour has not been able to take place. Obstacles are being created in the House for Zero Hour. Hardly any discussion is happening on almost any Bill,” Patra said.
Alleges Double Standards on Student Issues
The BJP leader accused the Congress of adopting a selective approach on issues concerning students.
Referring to Karnataka, Patra criticised Priyank Kharge, son of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, over his remarks regarding protests against alleged irregularities in police constable recruitment examinations.
According to Patra, Priyank Kharge had said that students could continue their hunger strike and that action such as a baton charge would precede any discussion about resignation.
Patra alleged that Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge had remained silent over the remarks while continuing to raise student-related issues in Parliament.
He also claimed that while Mallikarjun Kharge spoke extensively in the Rajya Sabha on issues concerning students, neither he nor Rahul Gandhi had commented on the controversy involving Priyank Kharge.
Raises Jharkhand Recruitment Issue
Patra further alleged that the Congress had ignored protests by candidates related to the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) examinations.
He claimed that thousands of students were protesting in Jharkhand but the Congress was neither speaking in their support nor raising the issue inside Parliament.
Calling it “selective outrage,” Patra alleged that the Opposition chooses issues based on political considerations.
Concern Over Lack of Debate on Key Bills
The BJP spokesperson also criticised the repeated disruptions for preventing debate on important legislation.
He referred to the Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Bill, 2026, saying the proposed legislation deals with timelines for registration of births and deaths, citizens’ rights, and related legal provisions, but Parliament had been unable to discuss it due to continuous disruptions.
Patra also highlighted the introduction of the Bankers’ Books Evidence Bill, 2026 by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, describing it as an important Bill affecting the banking sector and millions of citizens.
He said the public was being deprived of hearing parliamentary discussions on such significant legislation because of repeated protests and disruptions in the House.
Appeals for Smooth Functioning of Parliament
Patra said Parliament should function to enable discussions on important national issues and legislation rather than being stalled by political protests.
He accused the Congress and its INDIA alliance partners of following double standards and said their conduct was preventing Parliament from effectively carrying out its legislative responsibilities.
