Gangtok: Cross-border trade between India and China resumed through the Nathu La route on Saturday, marking the restoration of commercial activity after a gap of six years. The information of the reopening ceremony is shared by Indo-Tibetan Border Police on its social media handle ‘X’.
The reopening ceremony was held at Sherathang in Sikkim, where State Commerce and Tourism Minister T.T. Bhutia formally inaugurated the resumption of border trade. The event marked an important step towards reviving economic and commercial ties through one of the historic trade routes connecting the two countries.
Following the inauguration, traders from India and China met at the Nathu La border crossing and exchanged greetings, symbolising the revival of cross-border trade and people-to-people interaction after the prolonged suspension.
The reopening of the Nathu La trade route is expected to benefit local traders and businesses in the region while boosting economic activity in Sikkim. The resumption of trade is also seen as an important development in restoring traditional commerce through the strategically significant Himalayan border pass.
