New Delhi: The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the construction of the third and fourth railway lines on the Ballari–Guntakal section, covering parts of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, at a total estimated cost of ₹1,264 crore.
The Cabinet decision was taken on 24 June, and was announced by Union Minister for Railways, Communications, Electronics & Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw during a press briefing.
The project will expand the existing network of Indian Railways by approximately 46 kilometres and is aimed at improving rail connectivity, enhancing operational efficiency, and strengthening freight transportation capacity.
According to the government, the upgraded railway corridor will facilitate an additional 16 million tonnes of freight traffic annually and is expected to generate logistics cost savings of around ₹149 crore every year.
The development is part of the government’s broader strategy to modernise railway infrastructure, improve freight movement, and support economic growth through enhanced connectivity across regions.
