New Delhi : The Government of India has expressed deep concern over the attacks on two commercial vessels — MT Al Bahiayah and MT Mombasa — while they were transiting through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
According to the statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Government of India, both vessels were carrying a total of 30 Indian seafarers among their combined crew of 46 members.
The MEA informed that among the 12 Indian nationals onboard MT Al Bahiayah, one Indian seafarer tragically lost his life, while another sustained injuries. On MT Mombasa, which had 18 Indian nationals onboard, 9 Indian crew members suffered injuries, including 2 who are reported to be seriously injured.
The Government of India extended its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased Indian national and wished a speedy recovery to all those injured.
The Indian Mission and Post in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are closely monitoring the situation and remain in constant contact with the UAE authorities to ensure all possible assistance and support to the affected Indian seafarers.
Strong Diplomatic Protest Lodged with Iran
The Ministry of External Affairs further stated that the Deputy Chief of Mission of the Embassy of Iran in New Delhi was summoned by the MEA on the morning of 14 July 2026.
During the meeting, India lodged a strong protest against the attacks and conveyed its serious concerns over the safety of commercial shipping and Indian citizens working onboard international vessels.
India Condemns Attacks on Maritime Security
India strongly condemned the attacks and described them as acts of violence targeting seafarers and disrupting free and safe navigation through international waterways, including the Strait of Hormuz.
The MEA reiterated India’s deep concern over the resumption of attacks and escalation of hostilities in the West Asian region.
India called for an immediate cessation of violence and urged all sides to return to dialogue and diplomacy in the interest of maintaining peace, security and stability in the region.
Concern Over Threats to Global Maritime Trade
India highlighted that targeting commercial shipping and civilian infrastructure in the region must stop to restore free and uninterrupted navigation and commerce through international waterways, in accordance with international law.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important maritime routes, through which a significant share of global energy and commercial trade passes. India emphasised that ensuring the safety of seafarers and protecting international shipping routes remains a global priority.
