New Delhi/Auckland, New Zealand: Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a grand ceremonial welcome at Government House in Auckland, where the traditional Māori pōwhiri showcased New Zealand’s rich cultural heritage and indigenous traditions. Earlier, in a warm and special gesture, New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon personally welcomed Prime Minister Modi upon his arrival at Auckland Airport.
The two Prime Ministers later held wide-ranging bilateral talks, marking a significant milestone in relations by deciding to elevate the India–New Zealand relationship to a Strategic Partnership.
During the discussions, the leaders agreed to deepen cooperation across a broad spectrum of sectors, including trade, investment, technology, agriculture, dairy, food processing, healthcare, defence, and security. They also underlined the importance of strengthening people-to-people connections and committed to expanding collaboration in education, sports, culture, and other areas of mutual interest.
Prime Minister Modi also joined Prime Minister Luxon at the India–New Zealand Business Event in Auckland, where he highlighted India’s emergence as one of the world’s fastest-growing economies and a major global growth engine. Addressing business leaders from both countries, he showcased investment and partnership opportunities in technology, talent mobility, services, food processing, FinTech, space, and infrastructure.
The visit also witnessed an enthusiastic community programme attended by members of the Indian diaspora, where Prime Minister Modi received a warm and affectionate welcome.
Addressing the gathering, Prime Minister Modi said that the India–New Zealand relationship is founded on cherished memories, enduring friendship, shared democratic values, and a common commitment to progress. He emphasised that India values every nation not by the size of its population but by its dedication to the welfare of its people.
Highlighting the cultural bonds between the two countries, he noted that India and New Zealand share a deep respect for their indigenous cultures and are equally committed to preserving and celebrating their rich heritage. He also remarked that despite global uncertainties, India continues to witness unprecedented development while maintaining a balanced focus on economic growth, environmental sustainability, and cultural heritage.
Prime Minister Modi described the decision to elevate bilateral ties to a Strategic Partnership as a historic step, stating that both countries would now pursue cooperation across all sectors with clear objectives and measurable outcomes.
He also referred to the India–New Zealand Free Trade Agreement, signed earlier this year in record time, saying it would create new opportunities for industries, farmers, businesses, and young people in both countries.
On regional security, Prime Minister Modi announced that India and New Zealand had agreed on a framework for maritime cooperation in the Indo-Pacific. The framework includes enhanced collaboration through bilateral naval exercises, logistics support, and hydrographic cooperation, aimed at strengthening maritime coordination and regional security.
Emphasising the shared global outlook of the two democracies, Prime Minister Modi said that India and New Zealand are trusted partners and close friends on the international stage. He reiterated that both countries believe reforms in global institutions, including the United Nations, are essential to effectively address contemporary global challenges and make international governance more representative and effective.
The visit marks a new chapter in India–New Zealand relations, reinforcing cooperation across strategic, economic, security, cultural, and people-centric domains while laying the foundation for a stronger and more comprehensive partnership in the years ahead.
