New Delhi : US President Donald Trump on Monday claimed that officials from the United States and Iran are expected to meet in Doha on Tuesday, raising the possibility of fresh diplomatic engagement between the two countries. Speaking about the proposed meeting, Trump said it “could perhaps be important, or maybe not,” without providing further details about the agenda or the level of representation, International media reports said.
According to media reports soon after Trump’s remarks, Iran rejected the claim, insisting that no talks with US officials have been planned. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei clarified that the country’s delegation is visiting Doha solely to oversee the implementation of the US-Iran Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and that the visit has no diplomatic meeting scheduled with the American side.
Baghaei stressed that reports suggesting direct discussions between Iranian and US representatives are incorrect. According to him, the purpose of the delegation’s trip is limited to monitoring commitments related to the MoU, and there is no provision for bilateral negotiations during the visit.
The contrasting statements from Washington and Tehran have created uncertainty over whether any formal engagement between the two sides will take place in the Qatari capital. While Trump indicated that a meeting was expected, Iranian officials have categorically denied that any such conversation is on the agenda.
