New Delhi : Amid the escalating war-like situation in West Asia, the Ministry of Home Affairs has directed all states and Union Territories to remain on high alert and ensure strict maintenance of law and order across the country.

In a communication to state governments, the ministry advised authorities to exercise special vigilance over any demonstrations that may be organised in support of or against Iran. The letter noted that ongoing international developments could have repercussions in different parts of India and stressed the need for close monitoring of public gatherings.

The ministry also cautioned that certain anti-social elements or organised groups might attempt to disturb public order under the guise of protests. Intelligence agencies have therefore been alerted, and additional surveillance has been recommended in sensitive areas to prevent any untoward incidents.

Authorities have further been asked to keep a close watch on inflammatory or misleading content circulating on social media platforms to prevent the spread of rumours and attempts to incite tension. District administrations and police officials have been instructed to take necessary precautionary measures and remain prepared to respond swiftly to any situation.

The central government reiterated that any unlawful activities, violence, or attempts to damage public property will be dealt with firmly. It emphasised maintaining peace and communal harmony through coordinated efforts between the Centre and the states.

The advisory comes in the backdrop of heightened tensions following the reported killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, in joint strikes by the United States and Israel. In the aftermath, protests have been reported in several parts of India, prompting authorities to tighten security arrangements.

Meanwhile, demonstrations have also been reported from parts of the Jammu and Kashmir Valley. In Srinagar, mobile internet services have been suspended and schools closed as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order.
