New Delhi : The Kalamassery Unit functions as an operational manufacturing unit of HMT Machine Tools Limited, a subsidiary of HMT Limited. To explore revival measures for HMT Machine Tools Limited, the Government constituted a Technical Committee through an order dated 01 November 2024. The Committee has since submitted its report. This information was provided by the Minister of State for Heavy Industries, Shri Bhupathiraju Srinivasa Varma, in a written reply in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, December 2.
HMT Machine Tools Limited was found ineligible for pay scale revisions effective from 01 January 2007 and 01 January 2017 as per the prescribed guidelines. Currently, employees of the Kalamassery Unit are facing a delay of approximately two months in salary disbursement. As the Kalamassery facility is only one of the company’s units, it does not have a separate Chairman or Managing Director.
The company has been facing a severe financial crisis, with its net worth eroding over the years due to outdated machinery, low productivity, and other operational challenges.
Additionally, the Government has designated suitable employees of HMT Limited and its subsidiaries as Estate Officers under Statutory Order 222 dated 14 January 2011, as per the Public Premises (Eviction of Unauthorised Occupants) Act, 1971.
HMT Machine Tools Limited, which operates multiple units including Kolkata—being a Central Public Sector Enterprise registered under the Companies Act—functions according to the Act’s provisions and Government of India guidelines for CPSEs. It takes investment and operational decisions based on its business requirements.
