Vice-President Briefed on Major Urban Development and Power Sector Reforms

New Delhi :  Union Minister for Housing & Urban Affairs and Power, Manohar Lal, along with Minister of State Tokhan Sahu and senior officials, met Vice-President of India and Rajya Sabha Chairman C. P. Radhakrishnan at Parliament House today.

During the meeting, the Vice-President was updated on major initiatives, reforms, and achievements of the Housing & Urban Affairs and Power Ministries aimed at strengthening India’s cities and ensuring a reliable and sustainable power supply.

The Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs highlighted strong progress under flagship programmes such as PMAY–Urban, Smart Cities Mission, Swachh Bharat Mission–Urban, and AMRUT. These initiatives are focused on affordable housing, improved urban services, and building sustainable, resilient cities. Key developments in metro expansion, urban mobility, waste management, water supply, and green urban projects were also shared.

The Ministry of Power presented India’s growth in power generation capacity, modernization of transmission networks, and reforms to improve distribution efficiency and the financial health of DISCOMs. Updates were also provided on the country’s rapid renewable energy expansion, energy storage systems, and efficiency measures led by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency.

The Vice-President said that urban development and the power sector form the foundation of India’s economic progress. He praised ongoing efforts to build cleaner, greener, and more inclusive cities, and stressed the need for people-focused planning that benefits all citizens. He also appreciated initiatives to boost energy security, expand clean energy, and support India’s climate goals.

He emphasized that well-planned cities and dependable, affordable electricity are essential pillars for achieving the vision of Viksit Bharat.
