New Delhi : External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar on Thursday welcomed Foreign Ministers and Heads of Delegation attending the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi, stating that the world is currently facing increasing complexity and uncertainty with significant consequences for emerging markets and developing nations.
Addressing the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Summit 2026, Dr. Jaishankar underlined the need for a more effective global response to challenges related to energy, food, fertiliser and health security. He also stressed the importance of ensuring safe and unimpeded maritime trade flows through international waterways, describing them as critical for global economic stability and well-being.
The External Affairs Minister emphasised the need for resilient supply chains and diversified markets to strengthen economic stability among nations. He also called for collective action on climate change while upholding the principles of equity and common but differentiated responsibilities.
Highlighting the growing role of technology, Dr. Jaishankar said digital innovation should be leveraged to promote good governance and inclusive growth, while addressing concerns related to trust, transparency and equitable access.
On global peace and security, he stressed that challenges should be addressed through dialogue and diplomacy and called for stronger international cooperation against terrorism.
Dr. Jaishankar also reiterated the importance of reformed multilateralism, including comprehensive reforms of the United Nations Security Council in both permanent and non-permanent categories.
Referring to India’s BRICS Chairship, the Minister said India is focused on building resilience, innovation, cooperation and sustainability through the grouping. He expressed confidence that the discussions at the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting would contribute towards building a more stable, equitable and inclusive international order.
