New Delhi : Donald Trump is reportedly considering withdrawing the United States from NATO, amid escalating tensions with European allies over the ongoing conflict with Iran.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated that Washington may “re-evaluate” its role in the alliance, questioning its effectiveness if member nations restrict U.S. military operations. Speaking to Fox News, Rubio argued that NATO’s value diminishes if it prevents the U.S. from utilizing allied military bases when required.

Taking a stronger stance, Trump described NATO as a “paper tiger” in an interview with The Telegraph, stating that withdrawing from the alliance is under serious consideration. He also alleged that European countries failed to adequately support U.S. actions against Iran.

Tensions have been further exacerbated by concerns over the security of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for global energy supplies. The U.S. administration has expressed dissatisfaction over what it sees as limited participation by allied nations in safeguarding the region.

Framing the issue within the broader conflict, Rubio claimed that U.S. military operations have significantly weakened Iran’s air force, naval capabilities, missile systems, and defense infrastructure. He added that Washington is close to achieving its objectives, which he said would severely limit Iran’s ability to develop nuclear weapons in the near future.

The developments signal growing strain within NATO, raising questions about the future of the transatlantic alliance.
