New Delhi : Justice Yashwant Verma, who is embroiled in the cash scandal, is facing increasing difficulties. 63 Rajya Sabha MPs from various opposition parties on Monday submitted a notice of motion to the Chairman to remove Justice Yashwant Verma. This information is shared by the chairman of Rajyasabha Jagdeep Dhankhar in the upper house on Monday.
Justice Yashwant Verma has been continuously rejecting the allegations against him but as per the provisions of the Constitution, if any High Court judge is accused of corruption, impeachment proceedings are initiated in the Parliament on the basis of the report of the investigation committee. Even before this, impeachment proceedings have been initiated against judges. After this proposal is placed in the Parliament, a debate takes place and if it is not passed by voice vote, then voting is also conducted. During the tenure of P V Narasimha Rao, impeachment proceedings were initiated in the case of Justice V Ramaswami on the basis of the committee report. The debate went on for two days in the Lok Sabha and deep differences were seen between the government and the opposition on this matter.
On 1 February 1991, the Supreme Court Bar Association had passed a resolution calling for his removal and requesting that the Chief justice not assign him any further legal work. The Bharatiya Janata Party and Left parties had submitted a notice of motion to the Indian Parliament seeking his removal from office.
Justice V Ramaswamy was a judge of the Supreme Court of India and the first judge against whom removal proceedings were initiated in independent India.
As soon as the monsoon session began, 145 Lok Sabha MPs submitted a memorandum to the Lok Sabha Speaker for an impeachment motion against Justice Yashwant Verma. The MPs have taken this step under Articles 124, 217 and 218 of the Constitution. It is confirmed by the Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal in the Rajyasabha as during proceeding of the house the chairman asked him about this .
On March 15, 2025, cash was found at Justice Yashwant Verma’s official residence in Delhi. After this, Justice Verma was accused of corruption. He denied the allegations and called it a conspiracy. A video of burnt and half-burnt notes also went very viral.
