Samarkand: Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha has been selected to represent the Indian Parliament at the 12th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Global Conference of Young Parliamentarians, being held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, from September 4 to 6.
Chadha expressed his gratitude to the Vice President of India for nominating him to the Indian delegation for the international parliamentary gathering.
Founded in 1889 and headquartered in Geneva, the IPU is the world’s oldest and largest international organisation of national parliaments. It currently brings together 180 Member Parliaments and 15 Associate Members.
Focus on rights, justice and opportunities for young people
The theme of this year’s conference is “Reclaiming human rights, justice and dignity for all in turbulent times.”
Over the three-day meeting, young parliamentarians from different countries will deliberate on issues affecting the younger generation, including youth rights in conflict situations, digital rights and online safety, climate resilience and climate justice, and economic opportunities for young people.
Chadha said that as the world’s largest democracy and a country with one of the youngest populations, India has valuable experiences to share as well as lessons to learn on these issues.
Parliamentary engagement with Uzbekistan
Chadha also linked his participation in the conference with the strengthening of India-Uzbekistan relations. He noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Uzbekistan has provided fresh momentum to bilateral engagement.
He said the Indian parliamentary delegation would seek to contribute to this momentum by strengthening parliamentary-level cooperation and people-to-people engagement between the two countries.
The conference provides India an important platform to present its perspective on youth, democracy and emerging global challenges while building stronger connections with young lawmakers from across the world.
