New Delhi: External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar held a review meeting with the Foreign Secretary, officials of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), and India’s ambassadors in Kathmandu and Beijing to assess the situation following the recent flood disaster in Nepal.
The meeting focused on efforts to ascertain the status and well-being of Indian nationals in the flood-affected areas. The MEA is coordinating with various Union ministries, state governments, tour operators and project authorities to gather information and provide assistance to those affected.
India is also working closely with the Nepali authorities on relief and humanitarian operations, as well as efforts to locate and assist Indian citizens.
The floods, reported in areas near the Nepal–Tibet border, have affected communities along parts of the Trishuli and Narayani river systems. Initial reports indicated damage to homes, roads, bridges and other critical infrastructure, while rescue teams continued efforts to reach affected areas and trace people reported missing.
Indian visitors, pilgrims and other nationals were also among those whose whereabouts were being verified. The situation remains fluid, and casualty and missing-person figures are subject to confirmation by the relevant authorities.
The MEA has advised that information relating to Indian nationals will be shared as it is verified through coordination with the Nepali authorities and other agencies.
