-New Roadmap for Sports Cooperation Unveiled
New Delhi /Melbourne : “Stronger Partnership. Greater Ambition. Shared Future.” — With this vision, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s successful visit to Melbourne further strengthened the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, opening new avenues of cooperation across defence, economy, education, sports, and people-to-people ties.
Prime Minister Modi departed Melbourne for the final leg of his visit to Auckland, New Zealand. At the airport, he was seen off by Australia’s Foreign Minister Senator Penny Wong.
The Melbourne visit witnessed several important engagements aimed at deepening the relationship between the two nations. Discussions focused on expanding cooperation in strategic defence, trade and investment, education, sports, and strengthening the vibrant Indian community links between India and Australia.
PM Modi and PM Albanese Highlight Sports as a Bridge Between India and Australia
During his Melbourne visit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, visited the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) and interacted with members of Australia’s sporting community.
The two leaders witnessed young athletes showcasing their skills through exhibition matches, featuring sports including cricket, kabaddi, and Australian rules football.
Recognising sports as an important pillar of bilateral relations, both leaders launched the India-Australia Sports Collaboration Roadmap, aimed at expanding cooperation in sports exchanges, youth engagement, talent development, and sporting infrastructure.
Prime Minister Modi highlighted that with India hosting the Commonwealth Games in 2030 and Australia hosting the Olympic Games in 2032, the coming decade presents a historic opportunity to further strengthen sports collaboration between the two countries.
Sport Strengthens People-to-People Connections
Prime Minister Modi said that sports represent a key pillar of the India-Australia partnership, bringing people of both nations closer through shared passion, teamwork, and mutual respect.
Expressing his delight at visiting the world-famous MCG with Prime Minister Albanese, PM Modi said that increased sporting exchanges, youth participation, and collaborative initiatives would further strengthen the friendship between India and Australia.
He also praised the young sporting talent displayed at the stadium, saying that watching children participate in cricket, kabaddi, and Australian rules football was a reminder of the unique ability of sports to connect communities across borders.
India and Australia share a strong sporting relationship, and with both nations preparing to host major international sporting events in the coming years, there is significant potential for cooperation in sports training, youth development, infrastructure, and nurturing future talent.

During his visit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also met Angus Taylor, Leader of the Opposition of Australia, for discussions on the expanding India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
The meeting reflected the strong bipartisan support in Australia for closer relations with India and highlighted the shared commitment to taking bilateral ties to new heights.
Prime Minister Modi said that he had an engaging conversation with Angus Taylor on the growing strength of India-Australia relations and the wide range of opportunities ahead.
