Gurugram : Deepak Maini, Chairman of the Progressive Federation of Trade and Industry (PFTI), has welcomed the approval of the Central Government to set up HCL-Foxconn’s semiconductor plant at a cost of Rs 3,706 crore in Jewar, Uttar Pradesh. He described it as a historic initiative towards making India self-reliant.

Deepak Maini said that this project will prove to take India’s technological and industrial development to new heights. The production of 3.6 crore chips every month will meet the country’s growing needs of mobiles, laptops, automobiles, smart devices and other electronic devices domestically. This will reduce dependence on chip imports and India will become a strong center of the global semiconductor supply chain.

He said that this project, which will start from the year 2027, will provide employment opportunities to about 20,000 people, which will give a tremendous boost to economic activities especially in Noida, Greater Noida and Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Area. This will also provide new opportunities for technical support, training and business to local small and medium industries.

Along with this, Maini reiterated the demand that a semiconductor manufacturing plant should also be set up in an industrial city like Gurugram. He said that global automobile manufacturers like Maruti, Honda, Hero and Suzuki are already operating in Gurugram, which have a huge need for semiconductors. The Federation has already demanded the state government to take concrete steps in this direction.

Deepak Maini described the role of this project as important in strengthening the initiatives of the Central Government like ‘Make in India’, ‘Digital India’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’. He expressed confidence that with such high-tech investments, India will become not only a consumer but also a leader in global manufacturing.

He congratulated the Central Government, Government of Uttar Pradesh and HCL-Foxconn for this visionary step and expressed hope that this would provide a new base to the technological revolution in the country.
