Highlighting the transformation of the electronics sector, Vaishnaw said India produced around 320 million mobile phones last year, reflecting the rapid expansion of domestic manufacturing capacity.
He noted that mobile phones have also emerged as India’s largest single category of merchandise exports, marking a major shift in the country’s position in the global electronics supply chain.
The Union Minister pointed out that the situation was very different around a decade ago, when India depended heavily on imports to meet its domestic demand for mobile phones. The country has since transitioned towards large-scale domestic production, with phones being increasingly manufactured under the “Made in India” initiative.
Vaishnaw said the growth of mobile phone manufacturing demonstrates India’s expanding capabilities in electronics production and its increasing integration into global manufacturing and export networks.
