New Delhi : The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report alleging that a Class 4 student was assaulted and subjected to casteist slurs by a teacher at a Government Primary School in Ukawal village, Shivpuri district, Madhya Pradesh, on July 28, 2026.
According to the report, the teacher allegedly became enraged after seeing the boy, who belongs to the Dalit community, drinking water from his own bottle.
The Commission observed that, if the allegations are true, they raise serious issues of human rights violations. Accordingly, the NHRC has issued notices to the Chief Secretary of Madhya Pradesh and the Superintendent of Police, Shivpuri, seeking a detailed report within two weeks.
The Commission has directed that the report should also include the status of statutory relief provided to the victim, if any.
According to media reports published on August 1, 2026, the child informed his parents about the alleged incident, following which a complaint was lodged with the police.
