GIRLS SAFETY TRAINING AT ROTARY PUBLIC SCHOOL, GURGAON

Gurgaon : Safety of girls is of great concern to all and it is important for students to not only understand the magnitude of the problem, but be prepared to deal with safety issues and any unsafe situation. Therefore, the school organized a training program conducted by Sahayak Foundation in collaboration with Internati27-rotary-school-3-aonal College of Security Studies on personal safety – appropriately called Safe Sahayak for the girls of classes IX, X and XI. Seasoned and talented trainers from Safe Sahayk – Dr. Renu Suri, Ms. Kanwal Preet Kaur & Dr. S. N. Suri imparted this training to the teachers and students.

S.A.F.E. is a woman safety training program and acronym that stands for Self-protection Awareness and Familiarity Exchange. It is designed for both girls and boys, to firstly sensitize them on the problem and secondly to take charge of their own safety. It focuses on the role of mind in safety over physical training thus it follow a preventive and not a reactive approach to safety. The program also provided information on physical, mental and spiritual fitness essential for one’s safety.

The students were shown a presentation on the S.A.F.E. program. Few activities were condu27-rotary-school-4-acted to assess them on physical fitness namely – strength, flexibility, endurance etc. Every girl was assessed and given a report of her physical, emotional and intuitive fitness. They were familiarized with the role of body, emotions and intuition for safety, manage and control emotions, assertive communication skills to express different emotions and develop skills to overcome fear to reduce vulnerability.

Such programs are really helpful in general keeping in consideration the present day situations faced by us. Few teachers have also been trained for the Safe Sahayak Continuous Engagement Program (SEP) who shall be further training the girl students, boy students, teachers, non-teaching staff, parents, management and community leaders.
