New Delhi: Under the leadership of Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, the Delhi Cabinet has approved the draft bill related to the establishment and operation of private universities in the national capital. The proposed legislation will soon be presented before the Delhi Legislative Assembly for consideration.
Under the proposed framework, 25 per cent of seats in each course will be reserved for students of Delhi, providing greater access to higher education opportunities for local students. Considering the limited availability of land in the national capital, the policy will also allow the development of multi-storey and high-tech university campuses.
The draft bill proposes the establishment of a ‘Delhi Private Universities Regulatory Authority’, which will be responsible for ensuring quality, transparency and accountability in the functioning of private universities.
The new framework is expected to pave the way for the establishment of world-class universities and their off-campus centres in Delhi. It is also aimed at giving fresh momentum to research, innovation, entrepreneurship and industry-academic collaboration, thereby strengthening the city’s higher education ecosystem.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the decision is not merely about establishing new private universities, but represents a commitment to providing world-class higher education opportunities to the youth of Delhi within their own city.
She said the initiative will help set the direction for establishing Delhi as India’s knowledge capital and a major global hub for higher education, while creating greater opportunities for students, researchers, entrepreneurs and academic institutions.
